Solar and wind alone won’t fully decarbonise Australia’s energy system

We also need reliable energy that works when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.

This includes energy for industrial heat, manufacturing processes, and a clean gas supply for homes and businesses. The cheapest and most technically advanced solution to fill this gap is renewable natural gas.

  • What is renewable natural gas?

    Turning waste into renewable gas

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is made from the gases released as organic waste breaks down – including waste organics found in garbage, wastewater, and residues from agriculture. This process creates biogas, a mixture of mainly methane and carbon dioxide, which can be refined into biomethane, or RNG. RNG is a like-for-like substitute for conventional natural gas, but with lower emissions. Energy customers who buy the certificates from our RNG can claim the emissions benefits of using renewable gas.

Biogenic CO2: a valuable by-product

By-products of RNG

Producing RNG also creates a by-product known as biogenic carbon dioxide. During the biogas upgrading process, this carbon dioxide is separated from methane and can be used in the food processing industry or combined with green hydrogen to make renewable liquid fuels. Producing RNG from agricultural wastes also produces digestate, a soil conditioner that reduces water consumption and fertiliser. These three different products developed at scale will make RNG cheaper over time.

Production of RNG in other countries is already well advanced

How much RNG can we make?

  • 400PJ

Australia's renewable gas potential, enough to power our heavy industries and have gas left over.

  • 230PJ

Produced annually in the United States.

  • 260PJ

Produced annually in Europe, with a target of 1,000+ PJ by 2030.

What is LMS doing?

Our RNG Projects

LMS has already announced its first RNG project, working with SunPork and supported by Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to make RNG from the effluent from a piggery near Adelaide. It’s the first of many RNG projects, as we help reduce methane emissions and deliver sustainable energy solutions for Australia.
