• LMS was built on the belief that hidden value can be found in unlikely places

  • Adelaide entrepreneur Emanuel Falzon and his son John Falzon pioneered Australia’s first landfill biogas-to-energy project in the 1980s, capturing biogas from a neighbouring landfill and using it to fuel their brick kiln.

    01

  • What began as an innovative solution to a practical problem soon became something much bigger.

    02

  • They established the first organisation in Australia dedicated to converting methane from landfills into energy.

    03

  • The business has since grown and evolved, but our commitment to do the right thing by our people, our clients and the environment remains the same.

Our History

Timeline

  • 1980s - 90s

    Early innovation in landfill gas

The Falzon family, founders of LMS, pioneer the capture of landfill biogas to create electricity in Australia, and become the first to purify landfill biogas into biomethane or renewable gas.

  • 1996

    LMS Energy is founded

John Falzon formally establishes Landfill Management Services Pty Ltd, which later becomes LMS Energy.

LMS designs and installs landfill biogas extraction and flaring systems for various clients throughout Australia and Asia, as well as manufacturing. In the late ’90s, LMS installs Australia’s first enclosed flare at Garden Island (SA).

  • 2000

    Entering carbon and energy markets

LMS becomes the first company to sell carbon credits. LMS builds and commissions its first bioenergy facilities in Queensland, Western Australia and Northern Territory.

In the 2000s, LMS expands operations into Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. Portfolio grows to 41 biogas facilities across Australia.

  • 2012

    Transition to LMS Energy brand

Formal name change to LMS Energy. ‘LMS’ is no longer an acronym and is now a proper noun, becoming the brand identity.

  • 2016

    Established leadership in methane abatement

LMS becomes Australia’s largest landfill biogas and carbon abatement company.

  • 2019

Diversification into integrated renewable energy solutions

Australia’s first grid-scale solar project built on a landfill at Wollert (VIC). Australia’s first electric vehicle supercharger powered by bioenergy.

  • 2020

    Extending expertise into international markets

International expansion into New Zealand and the United States, growing portfolio to more than 60 biogas projects.

  • 2026

New applications for renewable gas in agriculture

Construction starts on Australia’s first agricultural renewable natural gas facility.

“Throughout our history, we have faced seemingly impossible challenges and made them possible. And we will continue to do so – in pursuit of a lower‑emissions future.”
