Australia’s leading landfill biogas company today welcomed the recommendations of the Federal Government’s independent review into the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) scheme.
LMS Energy (LMS) Chairman John Falzon said the review led by former Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb is a comprehensive review of Australia’s carbon credit scheme that proposes important reforms to improve its integrity and transparency.
“It’s essential that all stakeholders have confidence in the integrity of the scheme,” Mr Falzon said.
“Carbon credits will play an important role in helping Australia reach its emissions targets this century, so integrity is paramount.
“The ACCU scheme enables the landfill biogas industry to use or destroy methane emissions from landfills. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas if allowed to leak into the atmosphere. With the support of the ACCU scheme, LMS Energy captures this gas and uses it as renewable fuel.
“Over 25 years, LMS Energy’s projects have prevented the equivalent of 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the Earth’s atmosphere. All of that abatement has been independently verified.
“The review recommends timely and effective reforms to the scheme that will enable business to get on with the job of cutting greenhouse emissions.
“LMS will work proactively with the Government to make the recommended improvements to the ACCU scheme’s landfill gas method, to further ensure its integrity.”
