Australian methane abatement and renewable fuels company LMS Energy will partner with Cleanaway Waste Management to convert methane emissions from a major Sydney waste facility into renewable energy.
As one of the biggest methane abatement companies in Australia, LMS Energy and Cleanaway will use their collective expertise to increase methane abatement from the Lucas Heights bioenergy facility by around 10 per cent over the next 20 years.
LMS Energy Co-CEO Matt Falzon said the joint venture agreement will help Cleanaway reduce 15 million tonnes of CO2e emissions from the site over the life of the deal, while increasing renewable electricity generated.
“We are pleased to secure this strategic partnership with Cleanaway in an increasingly competitive market,” he said.
“Our shared vision for the Lucas Heights Bioenergy Facility is to pioneer industry-leading practices to capture methane emissions and convert them into renewable energy – turning environmental challenges into sustainable solutions. These outcomes are possible so long as appropriate policy is in place”.
Mr Falzon said the joint venture with Cleanaway was another step towards Australia delivering its international commitment under the Global Methane Pledge, to cut methane emissions by 30 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030.
“Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. We can only accelerate methane abatement in Australia if we have policy that continues to support and encourage these sorts of investments,” Mr Falzon said.
LMS Energy cuts greenhouse emissions by around 5 million tonnes of CO2e each year, operating on more than 65 sites across Australia, New Zealand and the US.
