Australian Gas Infrastructure Group and LMS Energy are pleased to announce that they have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding to deliver two foundation projects in Victoria progressing landfill biogas to biomethane, a renewable natural gas.
As part of the MOU, the two companies will explore the possibility of commencing a number of bioenergy projects across Victoria, aiming to produce up to 1.7 terajoules (TJ) of biomethane.
“At AGIG we are ready to not only engage with industry but collaborate with them to take biomethane to the next level,” said Vikram Singh, Head of Renewable Gas Development at AGIG.
“For any biomethane project to succeed it will require a policy driven environment that promotes the uptake of renewable gas similar to what we have seen with policy support for the uptake in renewable electricity generation to date.
“We are very excited for these major biomethane projects with LMS Energy and are eager to share the journey of this partnership,” Mr Singh said.
“Biomethane is a renewable gas that can be used interchangeably with conventional natural gas. Increasing its role in the energy mix is an important next step in Australia’s net zero future,” said Co-CEO Matthew Falzon.
“LMS Energy was the first Australian company to purify biogas for injection into the local gas network back in 1988. The technology for these projects is proven and biomethane is playing a vital role in the energy transition overseas. Supportive policy and foundational projects, such as the ones AGIG and LMS Energy are exploring, are needed to kick-start the Australian market.
“We look forward to drawing on our four decades of biogas experience to partner with AGIG on these important foundation projects in Victoria,” Mr Falzon said.
