ReOrganic Energy

ReORGANIC ENERGY

ReOrganic Energy is a 'waste-to-energy' green power initiative that is successfully integrating waste utilisation, recycling and electricity generation. The project at the Thiess Services, Swanbank Landfill, has been in operation since February 2002 and is currently producing enough electricity in one year to power an average of 6,000 homes. This sustainable development project is the first of its kind in Australia and one of the largest waste-to-energy projects from a single landfill in both Queensland and Australia.

The ReOrganic Energy project utilises landfill gas generated from the Swanbank Landfill and transfers it directly to a specifically modified boiler in the nearby Swanbank Power Station, which is otherwise depenent on black coal for power generation. In addition to displacing coal fired generation, this process will also reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen.

Rethinking the process of waste management is not only a bright idea, but will create a valuable resource for Australia. Landfill sites that produce economically viable volumes of gas for electricity generation can now contribute to a greener future.
